Gluten Free Pita Bread

And no, this is not a recipe! 😀

A couple of weeks ago while I was surfing the net looking for a recipe to make my own GF pitas, I came across the Gluten Free Pita website. I got so excited that I almost fell off my chair! I contacted GFL Foods to see if they would be interested in sending out a sample for me to review on my blog. Rami, the creator of the gluten free pita and founder of the company so graciously sent me a complimentary package of GF pitas to review. I do not have a personal connection to GFL Foods nor have I received monetary compensation to write a favorable review. (Sorry, I forgot to comply with the new FTC regulations on bloggers reviewing products on their websites, takes some time for me to develop new habits!)

Imagine Falafel, Gyros, Souvlaki, Tzatziki, Hummus, and Baba Ghannouj, all accompanied with real pita bread. Yes, they are gluten free but they taste very close to the real thing!

Ahhh… the memories I have of Flaming Kasseri Cheese at one of my favorite Albuquerque Greek restaurants, Yanni’s Mediterranean Grill and Opa Bar. Somehow, it is just not the same with cucumber slices!

Pitas, the pocket bread that was always fun to make stuffed PB& J sandwiches, pita pizzas or one of my favorite ways, stuffed with chicken salad.

Well, the day has arrived my friends. Gluten Free Pita Bread from GFL Foods! Click here to go to the website: Gluten Free Pitas. The web address is easy to remember too for future reference, just www.glutenfreepitas.com!  **Be sure to read the end of this post to see how you could win 2 free packages of GF Pita Bread! 🙂

The Ingredients:

Rice Flour, Corn Starch Flour, Yeast, Salt, Sugar, Xanthan Gum, Cellulose Gum, Canola Oil, Apple Cider.

I was especially impressed when I opened the bag and was greeted with the most pleasant "fresh baked" aroma of something hot from the oven.

The magic number for this GF pita is 40 seconds. From the freezer to the pocket you see above (sorry, my picture doesn't do it justice. It is difficult to hold a pita in the pocket shape while managing a camera with the other!) is a mere 40 seconds in the microwave.

The pita is very sturdy and does not fall apart when stretched and stuffed to the max (and then some)!

Profile view.

I kept expecting the pita to fall apart under the weight and and moisture of the chicken salad, but it held up perfectly!

I made this pita sandwich last night and Mike took it to work today for lunch. He said that the pita was the exact same as I had assembled it 15 hours later!

Overall, this GF pita bread earned a huge thumbs up from us!

Excited? Well, get ready to get even more excited!

I spoke with Rami today and he is going to let me give one lucky reader not one, but TWO packages of gluten free pitas!! WOO HOO! I feel like Oprah on her “My Favorite Things” show! 😉 To enter the contest, all you have to do is leave a comment of your favorite way to eat pita bread!

I will select a random winner on Thursday, December 10th. Good Luck!

  1. I think I would enjoy it filled with chicken salad just like you! Looks amazing!

  2. I LOVE pita two ways: as a wrap and just dipped in hummus. If I won these I would have to find GF hummus. My recipe is GF but I have never made it so it tastes good!

  3. Our favorite way to eat pita bread used to be stuffed with roasted lamb and grilled peppers. The girls have never had the pleasure of eating pita, and I’m so excited to see that someone out there is making it GF!

  4. I would take them with me to my favorite Mediterranean restaurant, and have pita with all the great spreads like hummus and roasted eggplant. Just like everyone else!

The product sounds great and I look forward to giving it a try.

  5. Wow, I haven’t had pita in almost 10 years. I used to love it with falafel. Oh man, I think I’m beginning to drool! Really, it’s been so long, I’d even forgotten that pitas exist! LOL YUM!!!

  6. Oh my Gosh…. We can take our OWN PITA to our fave Greek restaurant. They have a GF menu but NO pita!

I personally have mixed taking home made dolmas and feta cheese and putting them in pita bread to eat them. Yummy.. Ok it may sound not so great but it’s delish.

We also like filling pita bread with black beans, rice and eggs for breakfast. We use black beans to get the fiber Celiacs need, the rice for our carbs and the egg whites for protein. We also put Mrs. Braggs Liquid Amino’s on the mixture as it’s a bit like soy sauce but tastes good and is good for you. Of course, we use it because it gives great flavor.

We also love taking Pita and just dipping it in our favorite hummus. We love lots of flavors of hummus and have missed having good Pita bread around for dipping. We have been dipping with some EnerG rolls or using carrots, celery, etc.

I feel like it’s Christmas morning knowing good Pita bread is now available!!!!!!!!!

  11. As a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! But to be fancy I would make it Greek style with lamb, onions, tomato and yogurt sauce. Delicious!

  12. Yes I will definitely share it with the several GF groups I’m in.

  13. I’d love to try it. Sounds great!

  14. I’ve been gf for just over a year now, and I’ve recently in the past few months been wanting some warm pita bread! I’d use it as my staple sandwich bread, from ham slices to chicken salads to dipping in hummus, as well as quinoa tabouleh that I’ve tried, oh and along with some warm soup now, and in the summer along with a fresh salad. I miss the smell and taste of the warm pita I used to eat at our local mediteranean restaurant. Thanks for letting us know – I’m smiling and will be searching for this now!

  15. I love pitas stuffed with falafal, onion, cucumber, tomato, and yogurt sauce!

  16. I really like to split it open and put lots of butter on it.

  17. I like a pita with grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, and a Greek yogurt/cuccumber sauce. Serve with prepared sweet potato chips. My whole family likes it. I usually serve wrapped in my flatbread recipe. A pita would be so much easier!

  18. I haven’t had pita bread in over 20 years!!! I can still remember how much I loved it. It doesn’t matter what you stuff in it, always yummy!

  19. We love it stuffed wth a Greek salad. My son has never had the pleasure of having one and my husband surely misses them.

  20. I love pita with chicken salad and sliced cheese! My daughter can’t wait to try them hot with cheese like a quasadilla.

  21. I LOVE pita bread. I woudl use it in many of the ways listed above but I can see using it for a breakfast sandwich. Kind of like a breakfast burrito. Eggs, & bacon or sausage, cheese…you could make it with chorizo too! Yippeeeeeeee! The wheels are a-turning!

  22. This pita bread looks fabulous! I would make a very authentic middle eastern sandwich – I would fill the pita with homemade gluten free felafel and tahini lemon dressing, as well as an Israeli salad made with cucumbers and tomatoes and olive oil and lemon juice. I recently made and blogged about gluten free felafel – please visit my blog for the recipe:

    Yum!!!!

  23. What AWESOME ideas!! You all are making me hungry 🙂

  24. I would love for my son to try these. He has never had a gyro! I grew up in NYC eating them all the time from the street vendors. Oh the smells!!!!

  25. I would love to taste this pita. We just went to Israel last summer before I knew I was gluten free. I would love to reexperience this taste again.

  26. Oh, to eat a falafel or having my favorite meal with some Pita bread. Even If I don’t win, I am going to look for this product. Makes me want to up into the computer and eat!

  27. OOOh, pita bread! How I have missed pita bread! Before going GF, I used to make a “breakfast pita” for the kids to eat on their way to school. Scrambled eggs and sausage with shredded colby jack was our favorite! I see these making a return to our breakfast rotation!

  28. I’d go with the hummus with cucumbers and feta! I’ve gotta find this stuff!

  29. My favorite way to eat a pita is to fill it with pizza filling. pizza sauce, pepperoni, daiya cheese, blk olives and mushrooms. If you slightly zapp it in the microwave and eat it warm and gooey its the best.

  30. Stuffed with Chicken salad

  31. BLT! Bacon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese of course!

  32. I would use it to make individual pizzas with CF cheese for my son who is possibly Autistic and recently was taken of casein!

  33. I am with you all the way! CHICKEN SALAD!! -with sprouts. yummmmmmmmmm

  34. Oh my gosh! Gyros are one of my very most favorite foods ever. I would love to share them with my GFCFSF boys. Somewhere I have a recipe for dairy free tzatziki sauce that I have been waiting to use. I am so excited about this pita bread. I think there are so many things it could be used for.
    Thanks for sharing!

  35. I would do my best to recreate Olgas. I live in the south and miss Olgas. I also have an 11 month old who doesn’t allow me to eat during the day 🙂

  36. I would love to try these!!! My favorite thing to do with pitas is cut them up, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and bake them for homemade pita chips. Eat them with hummus. YUM!!!

  37. I love pita bread and so does my son. I love to make salad pitas. He is recently diagnosed with a gluten allergy and he loves bread. I am going to have to check this out. Thanks so much.

  38. This is great news! My 2-year-old son has celiac disease, so I think I would either give him the pita plain (because I know he’d LOVE them, as he does all breads) or filled like a sandwich with meat and lots of veggies.
